3 days in Valle d’Itria between history and nature

The Itria Valley is in the heart of Puglia, between the provinces of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto. You will immediately realize that you have arrived, because you will find yourself immersed among dry stone walls, centuries-old olive trees and trulli.
The Itria Valley is a valley of characteristic villages, not reached by the sea, but isolated by a unique atmosphere.
The itinerary that we propose today on what to see in Valle d’Itria in a weekend, 3 days, is made up of three stages Alberobello, Locorotondo and Cisternino.

Day 1 Alberobello

Alberobello is located in the Puglia region of southern Italy in providence of Bari, it’s a remarkable town renowned for its wonderful UNESCO-listed trulli houses. Alberobello has a fairytale-like atmosphere that feels straight out of a fantasy film.
What is a trullo? A trullo is a traditional Apulian whitewashed dry limestone hut with a conical roof.
In the trulli’s roofs you can see a lots of symbols. These symbols give a very particular charm to this buildings. Most of the symbols are of Christian religious origin and range from the cross to the Christian monogram, from the symbols of passion to the pierced heart, from the Sacrament to the Eucharistic Chalice.
Others are pagan such as the rooster, the snake, the horseshoe, the ox or ram’s horns and primitive such as circles, triangles, straight and curved lines, gammatated swastikas such as those found on some ancient Apulian vases. Others ones take inspiration from magic, astronomical, zodiac and planetary signs. At least you can see simply ornamental such as cornucopia, star, cythe, hoe or mask.
In Alberobello there are two primary clusters of trulli, each offering a unique experience. The Rione Monte is the larger and more commercialized and Aia Piccola is primarily residential.
If you want see a beautiful landscape and take wonderful pictures you can go to Belvedere Santa Lucia a panoramic terrace, located adjacent to Chiesa di Santa Lucia, where you can admire all the trulli in the hill in front of you.
In Alberobello you can also see Santuario di Santi Medici Cosma e Damiano, Church of Sant’Antonio located at the far end of the Rione Monti, shopping tour and taste the typical recipes.

Day 2 Locorotondo

Locorotondo is located nearby Alberobello and it’s listed in the Most beautiful village in Italy. It’s a cheerful town set on a hill overlooking the entire Itria Valley.
Locorotondo means “round place” like its historic center made by little white houses in near perfect concentric rings.
Locorotondo is known for its “cumerse” (houses) with pointed gable roofs are fitted and aligned with the front facade of the homes.
The main attraction of Locorotondo is San Giorgio Church built between 1790 and 1825, the church has a dome and bell tower that are visible from anywhere in the town. Inside the church it’s preserved a delicate painting of St. George and a magnificent marble altar.

Day 3 Cisternino

Cisternino is a charming village located in the Valle d’Itria. Cisternino will fascinate you by nice vistas of cobbled alleys, beautifully decorated doors and windows; a selection of churches, plazas and trulli .
Every one love the Cisternino’ s quaint atmosphere.
Enjoy Cisternino simply means slow walk and peak at all its narrow alleys, small squares, and lovely corners.
Check out the Ponte della Madonnina a pedestrian bridge with stairs in the middle where you can go up and walk along to take in the views of the lovely buildings around.
Go to San Nicola Chiesa Matrice close to Piazza Garibaldi, Torre Grande built in the 11th century for defensive purposes, Church of San Quirico, the small Church of Santa Lucia, piazza dell ’Orologio with its
clock tower and Porta Piccola the main gate to the village.
